The Psychotherapist as a Creator of Outcomes!

Description:

David Jensen will stress the importance of the psychotherapist's role as a creator of legal and ethical outcomes, whether for good or for ill. In particular, he will instruct attendees on the ten fundamentals of practicing legally, ethically, safely, and confidently. This course will also cover the important subject of patients who are a danger to third parties, and provide attendees with an overview of the BBS administrative hearing process.

Learning Objective:

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the importance of the psychotherapist's role and their effect on good or bad legal and ethical outcomes.
  2. Identify the four fundamentals of practicing legally, ethically, safely and confidently.
  3. Recognize the differences between the duty to warn, the duty to protect, and the duty to report.
  4. Summarize the BBS administrative hearing process as it applies to therapy.

Presenter Information:

David Jensen has been a Staff Attorney with CAMFT since April 2002. He was born in Flint, Michigan, "Go, Tigers!", but was raised in Tustin, California.

Dave graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor's Degree in History, and he received his law degree from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California. Thereafter, Dave passed the California bar examination in February 1999, and did it on his first try!. In 2016, Dave was awarded a Master of Liberal Studies degree (English concentration) from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

As an attorney with CAMFT, Dave consults with its members regarding their legal and ethical dilemmas and obligations, and his is a regular contributor to The Therapist magazine.

Dave gives numerous law and ethics presentations to chapters, schools, and agencies, and his courses include:

  1. The Therapist as a Creator of Outcomes!, Hopefully Legal and Ethical Ones;
  2. Avoiding Unprofessional Conduct;
  3. Fun with Subpoenas;
  4. The Standard of Care and You!;
  5. Are You Ethical, You Sure?;
  6. Salt & Peppering Treatment Records with the Language of the Law;
  7. "Shh, It's Confidential": Confidentiality for California Psychotherapists; and
  8. "Thank You for Supervising Legally & Ethically!".

This course meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs as well as 6 hours of attendance credit for registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (AMFTs), Associate Social Workers (ASWs), trainees and graduate students as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Sierra Foothills CAMFT is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs, as well as registered AMFTs, ASWs, trainees and graduate students. Sierra Foothills CAMFT maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. Sierra Foothills CAMFT Provide # is 97723.

Registration for this event closes Tuesday, January 29, 2018, at 6 p.m.  There is a $5 late registration fee for attendees registering at the door so be sure to register early.  Refunds will be provided to registrants up to and until the close of registration, minus a $5 registration fee. There are no refunds after the close of registration.  There is no partial credit for arriving late or leaving early.

Important notice: Any power point and/or handouts will be emailed two days before the training. Please print and bring to the training. Continuing Education or Course Completion Certificates may be emailed to participants.

Going East on I80 from Roseville, Rocklin, etc., take the Grass Valley Highway exit. Turn right at the light, which is Highway 49 South. Go to Lincoln Way and take a right. Go to the next stoplight, which is Auburn-Folsom Road, and take a left. Continue through several stoplights (approximately 1.5 miles). Turn left onto Maidu Drive. Continue on Maidu Drive through several stop signs for about 1.2 miles, at which point Maidu Drive curves sharply to the left. Continue on Maidu Drive for about 0.2 miles. Canyon View Community Center is on the right and is a light yellow/tannish building with green trim. There will be the Sierra Foothills CAMFT poster on the door.

Going West on I80 from Colfax, etc., take the Elm Avenue exit. Get into the left turn lane immediately and turn onto Elm Avenue. Continue on Elm Avenue and turn left onto Grass Valley Highway. Continue on Grass Valley Highway to Lincoln Way and take a right. Go to the next stoplight, which is Auburn-Folsom Road, and take a left. Continue through several stoplights (approximately 1.5 miles). Turn left onto Maidu Drive. Continue on Maidu Drive through several stop signs for about 1.2 miles, at which point Maidu Drive curves sharply to the left. Continue on Maidu Drive for about 0.2 miles.
