Walk and Talk Therapy:
Giving Psychotherapy a Breath of Fresh Air

Saturday May 12, 2018, from 9:30 a.m. to Noon.

Description of the workshop:

Everything in nature is either growing or decaying. Without growth, things languish, return to soil, and are replaced in another form. Growth is synonymous with any living thing; therefore, in order for a person or even the field of mental health to stay alive and vital, there must be growth.
There are inherent limitations to talk therapy in a traditional office setting. The way of the future for mental health is toward an integration of holistic experiences and modalities that involve broader sensory interventions. Wilderness Therapy, and specifically Walk and Talk Therapy, is a perfect example of how to meet the demand from clients who are yearning for more on their quest for health and wellness.

Learn about the benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy and Wilderness Therapy in general. Learn about technical parameters, applicable research, ethical considerations, and safety considerations structuring and facilitating this modality,

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Determine the extent to which a client's is able to benefit from Wilderness Therapy. (In terms of physical health, safety, etc.).
  2. Define at least 3 benefits to clients who participate in Walk and Talk Therapy.
    1. Exposure to natural elements such as sun light and fresh air has proven physiological and psychological benefits.
    2. Encountering familiar problems in an unfamiliar context may shed new light on existing problems.
    3. Solving natural challenges posed by a wilderness environment, may build up courage to face real-world problems.
    4. Exposure to activities in an unfamiliar context away from home, can encourage development of healthy self -esteem and social skills.
    5. Exposure to a natural environment presents opportunities to experience greater sensory awareness compared to having counseling in an office setting.
    6. Exercise has proven physiological and psychological benefits.
  3. Understand the necessary safety parameters that must be in place in order to facilitate a successful wilderness therapy experience including first aid and leadership capabilities.
  4. Understand the various modalities that Wilderness Therapy has been safely and successfully implemented.
  5. Utilize the parameters of safely and effectively facilitating Walk and Talk Therapy in an urban environment and in a wilderness setting.
