Rising Strong in Life after an Eating Disorder

September 10, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 Noon

First Congregational Church
710 Auburn Ravine Road
Auburn, CA 95603

From I 80, take Highway 49 N and turn right onto Palm Avenue. If coming south on Highway 49, turn left onto Palm Avenue. Continue on Palm Avenue to the stop sign. Turn left onto Auburn Ravine Road and continue to the stop sign. Turn right at the stop sign even though it says Church Street. Go straight up the never-ending hill and all the way to the back of the church parking lot. The meeting is in Fireside Room, located in Overmiller Hall. There will be a sign with the CAMFT logo and Sierra Foothills Chapter on the door of Overmiller Hall.

In the U.S., 20 million women and 10 million men suffer from an eating disorder--and an immeasurable number of loved ones suffer alongside them, uncertain how to help or cope. Those in recovery often feel shame about having struggled, even when they experience the freedom of recovery. We struggle to own our story and often end up suffering in a new way as we try to manage life after the eating disorder. As author Brene Brown, Ph.D., LMSW, noted, "The irony is that we attempt to disown our difficult stories to appear more whole or more acceptable, but our wholeness actually depends on the integration of all our experiences, including the falls." Discover what it means to fall into an eating disorder--and how to be brave, embrace vulnerability, and rise strong in life after. Experiential activities based on the work of Dr. Brown will be provided.

Outline and Agenda:

  1. The Backstory: how the eating disorder shows up in our lives
    1. Brief etiology
    2. Myths vs. facts
  2. Owning Our Own Eating Disorder Story
    1. The Reckoning
      1. Coming to terms with the truth about who we were before ED
      2. Knowing why the eating disorder behaviors made sense
    2. The Rumble
      1. Rumbling with shame & blame, values and accountability
      2. The anatomy of trust
  3. Question and Answers

Goals and Objectives: Following this presentation, attendees will be able to:
1. Identify 5 truths about how the eating disorder shows up.
2. Describe what shame is and how it relates to the ED story.
3. Describe 2 steps that can help turn process into practice.

True/False Questions to be answered at conclusion of presentation:
1. Eating disorders are solely biologically based.
2. The SFC stands for Simple Full Disclosure.
3. The 4 self-conscious affects are shame, humiliation, embarrassment and guilt.
