Title: Play Therapy

Description of course: Play is the language of children. Through play, children are able to process their experiences in a way that makes sense to them. In order to effectively counsel young children, therapists must have the tools needed to reach them at their developmental level. This training will provide an overview of the principles and techniques of child-centered therapy.

Objectives: Participants will be able to:

1. Respond therapeutically to young children using specific play therapy language.
2. Implement therapeutic limit setting using the ACT method.
3. Identify therapeutic themes in children’s play.
4. Demonstrate understanding of the Play Therapy Session Summary Form and how to use it to monitor progress in play therapy.

Target Audience: This workshop is for licensed clinicians (LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, and LEP) as well as non-licensed AMFT, ASW, graduate students and trainees.

9:45 to 10:30 Workshop
10:30 to 10:45 Break (coffee, tea, water, light refreshments)
10:45 to 12 Workshop

Instructor’s name and credentials: Elisabeth Liles-Lourick, Ph.D., NCC, CCMHC, LPCC, RPT-S, earned Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervison from University of Nevada, Reno in 2009. She is currently an associate professor and Department Chair at CSUS, in the Graduate and Professional Studies in Education, teaching courses on play therapy and counseling children and youth in a graduate-level counselor education program.
