Description of Presentation:
Laurie Linsley, LMFT will present an introduction to Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) as a form of animal-assisted therapy. A licensed mental health professional, in conjunction with an equine specialist, uses handling, grooming, and other activities with specially trained horses as part of psychological treatment for individuals with emotional and behavioral problems. Laurie will share her journey as she became involved in EAP and began working with her clients. She will also provide information on how others can become involved in this unique therapeutic approach.

As a group, we will take a closer look at how we feel when observing these amazing animals. Hands on and in person this experience will help you grow and find connections often lost in the virtual world. Laurie will discuss the objective and metaphorical approach of the therapy, along with a brief introduction to the methodology, theoretical concepts, research, practical uses, and the wide variety of benefits attributed to this therapy. Laurie will also describe how EAP can be combined with other methodologies such as EMDR, CBT, Gestalt, and Trauma Therapy.

Instructor information:
Laurie has been involved with horses since 1982. She graduated from CSU, Fresno in 1992 with a BS degree in Therapeutic Recreation. She worked for several years in psychiatric and residential treatment facilities. In 2006, she began a horse business in Anchorage, Alaska, and partnered with local therapists as an equine specialist to provide a therapeutic environment outdoors. In 2014, she obtained her MS in Marriage and Family Therapy. She is currently licensed in Alaska and California. She was certified through EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) from 2010-2018. In 2017, she obtained a Post Master’s Degree in Equine Assisted Mental Health Counseling from Prescott College in AZ. She is currently working on a new certification through the Natural Lifemanship program.

Educational Goals:
After completing Introduction to Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the differences between the 7 types of equine assisted therapies.
2. Explain the benefits of EAP and identify research projects that demonstrate the effectiveness of this modality.
3. Explain the EAP process and identify available training opportunities.

Measurable Learning Objectives:
1. Explain why horses are used in the therapeutic process and identify how EAP can be integrated into specific therapeutic models.
2. Identify at least 3 mental health disorders that may benefit from EAP.
3. Identify 3 different professional organizations/colleges that provide training/certificates/degrees in EAP.

Course Training Level:
This is appropriate for all levels.

Award of Course Completion Certificates:
Upon completion of course, attendees will receive a Certificate for 2 CEUs or a Certificate for 2 Attendance Hours after completing a course evaluation.
