Brian Lewis has been practicing art therapy in a wide variety of settings, including San Mateo and Placer Counties as well as non-profit and private practice since 1995. A former Studio Art Major from University of California at Davis, he uses art as an assessment, bonding, and learning tool with most of his clients and has developed a wide repertoire of art interventions to meet myriad client ages and interests.

Brian is currently in full-time private practice, with offices in Newcastle and Roseville, California. He is most interested in the power of Art Therapy to help heal traumatic emotional wounds.

Goal of Workshop: To increase the mental health practitioner's understanding of basic principals of Art Therapy, proper use of art materials, and the implementation of a standardized assessment technique in order to integrate the use of art making into therapy practice.

Objectives:

  1. Define and discuss Art Therapy.
  2. Choose the appropriate art materials for the client and situation.
  3. Name the four most common and well-researched Art Therapy Assessment tools.
  4. Direct client in making and discussing the following drawings: Scribble, Six Feelings; Hand Portrait, and Tree Drawing. When combined, these make up the Emotionally Projective Assessment Series.

Background: Art therapy is the practice of helping clients create and process art during therapy sessions. This helps the child or adult find a new way of expressing their distress, communicate their point of view, or find a new perspective on their situation. Using simple art materials, the client is prompted to draw rather than just talk about the problem or question at hand, with the art serving as a springboard for further discussion.

Description: The basics of art therapy will be reviewed, including choices of art materials and considerations of appropriate situations for using art. Some standard art assessment techniques will be presented. Because there is no better way to understand how a simple art directive can open a person up to insight, attendees will be given the opportunity to follow the directive and try it themselves. Reviewing and offering interpretation of the drawings will be demonstrated and all self disclosure will be strictly voluntary. Discussion will also touch on how art therapy can gently break through the defenses set up by trauma. Any clinician can reap some benefits for their client-centered work by employing a few standard art therapy assessment tools. These tools can be easily reproduced and your comfort level with using art materials for connecting with clients and exploring challenging client questions may be increased.

This course will meet requirements for two hours of CEU for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs, or two hours of attendance for registered interns, trainees, and ASWs. Sierra Foothils CAMFT is an approved CAMFT CEU provider (#97223) through the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
