How to Melt Away Resistance in Therapy

Instructor Information:
Dean Bender, LMFT, has treated clients for 20 years, using CBT from the beginning and becoming a David Burns CBT fan early in his career. With a private practice for several years in Rocklin, CA, he works with teens and adults, treating mood disorders, marriages, relationships, and teaching social skills. In 2016, he added trauma to his protocol. He has conducted workshops for professionals on personality assessments, couple's therapy, and CBT and has taught 30 college courses. He has served in two small psychotherapy professional organizations as a member of the board of directors, secretary, treasurer and is currently the Past President of Sierra Foothills Chapter of CAMFT. He earned a master's degree in Counseling Psychology in 2002 and worked for 11 years at LDS Family Services as a part-time therapist. He has a master's degree in business administration (MBA) an is a Certified Public Accountant, retired.

Description of Presentation:
Participants will learn how to melt away resistance in therapy, based on a new book by Dr. David Burns, Feeling Great. This will provide new fuel for those existing clients who may have been in therapy for over a year and struggle to apply what they are learning. It will also support attendees with their new clients by recognizing and melting away resistance before the first intervention begins.

Educational Goals:
After this workshop, participants will able to assess resistance and use techniques to melt the resistance away.

Measurable Objectives:
As a result of participating in this workshop, participants will apply:

  1. Two new approaches to assess resistance;
  2. Three new techniques to adequately deal with resistance.

Course Training Level:
This is appropriate for all levels.

Award of Course Completion Certificates:
Upon completion of course, attendees will receive a Certificate for 2 CEUs or a Certificate for 2 Attendance Hours after completing a course evaluation.

Sierra Foothills CAMFT is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, and LEP as well as non-licensed AMFT, ASW, APCC, graduate students and trainees. This course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, and LEP as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
