Description of Presentation:
The content of this course includes research based clinical interventions. The clinical approach described in this course is directly targeted to addressing the individual and relational mental health needs of a marginalized community. The course relies on Polyamory: A clinical toolkit for therapists (and their clients) by Martha Kauppi. The course provides clinicians with concrete tools based in the developmental model of couples therapy (by Ellyn Bader & Peter Pearson).
About the Presenter:
I (Jimmy Bridges he/they) am a licensed couple and family therapist in Massachusetts, a certified family life educator through NCFR, AAMFT approved supervisor and clinical fellow, and a part-time faculty member at National University in the MFT masters and doctoral programs. I teach the Couples and Sex therapy course, along with the practicum and internship courses for students in their clinical year. I received my doctoral and master’s degrees in Couple and Family Therapy from Kansas State University. I also received two graduate certificates in Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies and Social Justice Education from Kansas State University. I received extensive training and supervision in couples therapy in my graduate program. I was later trained in the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy at the Couples Center of the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts. I also received additional training in this model from Ellyn Bader (The Couples Institute), and training in using the model for polyamorous clients from Martha Kauppi (The Institute for Relational Intimacy). My main clinical specialization is working with queer and non-monogamous relationship structures. I provide nation-wide coaching for folks navigating polyamory and opening-up their relationship into non-monogamy. I also provide trainings and case consultations on utilizing the developmental model when working with alternative relationship structures.
Educational Goals:
- Understand research and concepts related to non-monogamy, specifically addressing key terms, misconceptions, and stigma
- Understand key tasks in therapy when working with non-monogamous client systems.
- Learn how to conceptualize and intervene with polyamorous client systems using the developmental model of couple’s therapy
Measurable Learning Objectives:
- Learn how to determine who should be included initially in treatment when you begin to work with a non-monogamous client system
- Be able to find resources for 2 of the main theoretical approaches used with non-monogamous clients from a systemic perspective
- Learn 3 key interventions used within the Developmental Model of Couples therapy for polyamorous clients

This is appropriate for all levels.
