Drs. Nancy and Paul Aikin are experts in the practice and teaching of Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT) and for Families (EFFT). EFT is the most researched model of couples therapy that exists, having 16 rigorous studies showing consistently positive outcomes--even when combined with depressed and traumatized folks included. The positive follow-up studies show these results are stable over time.

EFT combines a systems view, a here-and-now experiential approach, a focus on emotional and an attachment understanding to create a new science of adult love and bonding. Its treatment model provides an opportunity for new bonding events between couples building secure attachments and safe havens. EFFT is newer in its development and preliminary evidence supports the effectiveness of EFFT as well.

EFT and EFFT have a precise treatment map of steps and stages and a unique understanding of couple and family distress as seen through the lens of attachment. Using a combination of didactic and experiential material, the Aikins will introduce you to these models.

Goals and objectives for the participants are to:

  1. Outline the basic principles of EFT:
  2. Describe the role of emotion as a key organizer of inner experiences and interactions in couple and family relationships;
  3. Identify the steps and stages involved in Sue Johnson's emotionally focused couples therapy;
  4. Apply a systems approach when treating the insecure attachments of couples, specifically as demonstrated in the negative cycles that undermine connection.
