The Art of Presence 101:  Two-Hour Training

Presented by

Kimberly R. Mascaro, PhD, LMFT

March 14, 2020 - 9:30 a.m. to 12 PM.

Instructor Information:
Kimberly R. Mascaro, PhD, LMFT, began working with under-represented and under-served youth and families in 1998, which quickly taught her about the profound impact of trauma. Since then, she has served those affected by violence, poverty, and addiction, while completing her MS in counseling psychology and later a PhD in clinical psychology. Dr. Mascaro taught psychology courses at Arizona State University for over a decade – this is where mindfulness became more than a concept, but instead, a way of living. She is excited to share these practices with both clients and fellow therapists serving as a reminder that embodiment can become our most trusted guide.

Educational Goals:
The Art of Presence 101: An Experiential Workshop in Mindfulness, Grounding and Embodiment promises to be a morning of just that – one that brings us deeper within, anchoring us to the here and now, and even slowing us down enough to experience awareness though the body. After defining terminology, the instructor, Dr. Mascaro, will lead participants in nearly a dozen exercises, which can be used immediately in therapy sessions with a variety of clients, from those experiencing fear and dissociation, to others who want support with healing trauma, managing stress and increasing focus. Discussion will include health benefits of mindfulness-based self-regulation, ways to include children, and how to determine the right tools for particular clientele.

Educational Goals:
The primary educational goals for this workshop are to:

  1. Increase clinician’s knowledge base of concepts: mindfulness, grounding, and embodiment. This includes the health benefits of related practices/techniques.
  2. Increase clinician’s comfort level instructing and applying mindfulness-based strategies to diverse client populations in therapy sessions.
  3. Differentiate between techniques that are safe versus unsafe given client presentation and population.

Measurable Objectives:
As a result of participating in this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast the concepts of mindfulness, grounding and embodiment.
  2. Demonstrate tools and skills for helping hyperaroused and/or dissociative clients ground in order to become aware of their bodies and therefore participate in therapy.
  3. List three or more health benefits of regular mindfulness practice and demonstrate these.
