Title: How to Teach Communication Techniques to Clients

Description:
In this presentation, attendees will learn what and how to teach communication skills under a wide variety of circumstances: conflict resolution, attachment injuries, defusing arguments, dealing with bullies, etc. Several teaching tips will be presented. The handouts will contain summaries of the methods and references to the several resource materials. Some of the techniques will be demonstrated. If you have a favorite technique, please be ready to share it with a 1-minute limitation. If that is not possible, please write it up and we will email a copy to all the participants.

Learning Objectives:

  1. List four ways to teach skills to clients.
  2. Demonstrate the five key areas of communciation to to focus on: conflict resolution, healing attachment injuries, giving apologies, raction to confrontation, and how to suppor your spouse’s or partner’s venting.
  3. Identify two approaches to use the teaching opporutnities as a natural bridge to to the the real problems in the relationship.
  4. Explain two key ideas for dealing with adult bullies.

Target Audience:
This workshop is appropriate for licensed clinicians (LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, LEP) as well as graduate students, trainees, or pre-licensed AMFT, ASW, APCC.

Presenter:
Dean R. Bender, LMFT, has had private practice for seven years in Rocklin, CA. He earned a master’s degree in Counseling Pscyhology in 2002, worked for eleven years at LDS Family Services as a part-time therapist. He has a master’s degree in business administration (MBA), and is a retired Certified Public Accountant.

He has conducted workshops for professionals on personality assessments, couples therapy and CBT and has taught 30 college courses. He has served in two small psychotherapy professional organizations as a member of the board of directors, secretary, treasurer and president elect.

Refund Policy:
Early registration closes on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 6 p.m. Refunds may be provided to registrants up to the close of registration, minus a $5 refund fee. No refunds after the close of registration. No partial credit for arriving late or leaving early.

Award of Course Completion Certificates:
Attendees will receive a Certificate for 2 CEUs or a Certificate for 2 hours of Attendance at the end of the course and upon completion of course evaluation.

Sierra Foothills of CAMFT is approved by California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, and LEP as well as non-licensed AMFT, ASW, APCC, graduate students and trainees. SFC CAMFT Provider # is 97723.

This course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. This course also meets the qualifications for 2 hours of attendance credit for Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (AMFT), Associate Social Workers (ASW), Associate Professional Clinical Counselors (APCC), trainees and graduate students as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Going East on I80 from Roseville, Rocklin, etc., take the Grass Valley Highway exit. Turn right at the light, which is Highway 49 South. Go to Lincoln Way and take a right. Go to next stoplight, which is Auburn-Folsom Road, and take a left. Continue through several stoplights (approximately 1.5 miles). ****See below for more directions

Going West on I 80 from Colfax, etc., take the Elm Avenue exit. Get into the left turn lane immediately and turn onto Elm Avenue. Continue on Elm Avenue and turn left onto Grass Valley Highway. Continue on Grass Valley Highway to Lincoln Way and take a right. Go to next stoplight, which is Auburn-Folsom Road and take a left. Going South on Highway 49 from Nevada City, Grass Valley, etc., take a right at Lincoln Way. Go to next stoplight, which is Auburn-Folsom Road, and take a left. Continue through several stoplights (approximately 1.5 miles). ****See below for more directions.

****Turn left onto Maidu Drive. Continue on Maidu Drive through several stop signs for about 1.2 miles, at which point Maidu Drive curves sharply to the left. Continue on Maidu Drive for about 0.2 miles. Canyon View Community Center is on the right and is a light yellow/tannish building with green trim. There will be the Sierra Foothills CAMFT poster on the door.
